Il 13 aprile 1519, nelle stanze del palazzo di famiglia in via Larga a Firenze, nasceva Caterina de’ Medici, futura regina di Francia. Un paio di mesi dopo, il 12 giugno 1519, nasceva Cosimo I de’ Medici che sarebbe divenuto, a soli 17 anni, Duca di Firenze. Cinquanta anni dopo, il 13 dicembre 1569, lo stesso Cosimo costituiva il Granducato di Toscana divenendone primo granduca. A 500 anni dalla nascita di questi due personaggi chiave per la storia della città di Firenze – ma anche per le vicende d’Italia e di Francia – il Comune di Firenze, con il supporto organizzativo di Muse, ha messo nero su bianco un calendario di eventi che li ricordano e ne celebrano la vita e le gesta: oltre 50 appuntamenti prenderanno piede fino a dicembre 2019 con mostre, incontri, letture, concerti, visite guidate, occasioni di approfondimento e ancora degustazioni e ”viaggi nel tempo”, alla scoperta delle vite parallele di Cosimo e Caterina, che si incrociano più volte grazie agli strani intrecci di storia e politica. Illustrissimo Signor Duca: Cosimo I de’ Medici
Uno spettacolo di living history nel Salone dei Cinquecento, il luogo che più di ogni altro racchiude le gesta, i progetti, i sogni di un giovane duca divenuto signore di Firenze a soli 17 anni. La sala grande della sua residenza ducale diviene così lo scenario perfetto nel quale il personaggio storico di Cosimo I de’ Medici torna, per la magia di una sera, a vivere l’incontro con il pubblico, restituendo a dipinti, sculture e architetture la forza politica e visiva che ebbero cinquecento anni fa.

500 YEARS OF COSIMO AND CATERINA DE ’MEDICI
More than 50 events including shows, guided tours and exhibitions to celebrate the two key figures in the history of Florence On April 13th 1519, Caterina de’Medici, the future queen of France, was born in the rooms of the family palace in via Larga in Florence. A couple of months later, on June 12th 1519, Cosimo I de’ Medici was born and at the age of 17 he would become Duke of Florence. Fifty years later, on December 13, 1569, Cosimo himself constituted the Grand Duchy of Tuscany becoming its first Grand Duke. 500 years after the birth of these two key historical figures of Florence history – but also because of the vicissitudes of Italy and France – the Municipality of Florence, with the organizational support of Mus.e, organized a calendar of events that remember and celebrate their life and deeds: over 50 appointments will take place until December 2019 with exhibitions, meetings, readings, concerts, guided tours, opportunities for in-depth study, tastings and ” journeys in time ”, to discover the parallel lives of Cosimo and Caterina, who sometimes crossed their paths thanks to the strange interweaving of history and politics.

A show of living history in the “Salone dei Cinquecento (500)” inside Palazzo Vecchio, the place that more than any other one contains the deeds, projects, dreams of a young duke who became lord of Florence at only 17 years old. The great hall of his ducal residence thus becomes the perfect scenario in which the historical figure of Cosimo I de’ Medici returns, through the magic of an evening, to live the meeting with the spectators, giving political and visual strength to paintings, sculptures and architecture they had five hundred years ago. During his political career, Cosimo I de’ Medici indelibly designed a new architectural and urban plan of the city of Florence and of the whole Tuscany. Thus a city tour allows to retrace, step by step, an itinerary dedicated to Cosimo I which starts from his family home, Palazzo Medici on Via Larga, to expand to the Medici district, the Academy of Drawing Arts, the square and the ducal palace, to the adjacent noblemen houses architectures and the “Uffizi”, up to the monumental Pitti Palace.
